Basically, the companies they get are in bad shape. They make the best of a bad situation and either trim fat so the company can narrow its focus and turn it around or they are able to Jawa the shit out of the company and liquidate its assets in a profitable way. Assuming the company was going to fail, this is like selling your old car for scrap metal--at least you get something.

But with corporate turning to them not when needed, but to increase profit margin at cost to the company's longevity, it hurts the workers. Things like "it's cheaper to rent, so we'll liquidate the land we own (profit forbnext quarter), rent it back, then shocked Pikachu when rates go up and we can't afford the land/building our business is on/in".
