All that money has been invested in these cities though, California and San Fran have high taxes, and at least the last 20 years has been a very desirable place to live and work. Part of why they are building from the ground up is the regulation in these towns has gotten out of hand. Certainly we need proper codes, but at least from what I’ve read SF has taken it to an extreme. So, you end up being in the same place to lobby for votes to change the code to allow you to make those large investments. Or you just do it somewhere else where you can set up a more efficient system.

I think it’s fair to be skeptical, and to keep a close eye, but I think if they were able to accomplish this it would actually be great. I’m all for them trying, and would love to see something like this succeed. Not everyone wants to live in a big downtown.

I’m also for making it easier to fix existing cities, but when you’ve built your city on top of itself 5 times over, I’d imagine that just adds to the complexity and challenge.
