I think you missed the whole point. The OP isn't talking about "YOLO investing." OP pretty much said mom should just have VTI. Is upset that the FA is underperforming the broader market AND increasing her fees. I agree with the OP.

If mom was happy with FA, fees were the same and they just had 1 bad quarter. Fine, give the FA a chance to recover. But to have a bad quarter and underperform... It's like the old saying, I may not be a movie critic but I know a bad movie when I see one. If this FA is trying to get the "smaller" accounts off the books I would gladly take the suggestion and save my 1% fee.
