Let's be a little more honest though, we used to have bootstrap downloads via torrents for getting nodes started so you could download most of the blockchain quickly and then sync just the last week worth of transactions, but during the blocksize war they removed the ability to bootstrap core nodes arguing that everything should sync from node to node. The actual file size isn't particularly large and shouldn't take anybody weeks to download on a modern internet connection but even now the nodes just don't work as well to transfer a large file like dedicated file transfer protocols.
