To OP, that's exactly it. To present "earning percentage" you can use MWR or TWR methods (you can read about them [here](https://longspeakadvisory.com/twr-vs-mwr/) or [here](https://www.portseido.com/blog/should-you-use-simple-return-time-weighted-or-money-weighted/)). Me, I prefer MWR (which better tracks "did I sell correctly when prices were high, did I buy when prices were low"), but lots of companies use TWR (so they can be only "blamed" for their performance, not for when you added or withdrew money).
Try looking at the current absolute value of the portfolio instead. If he put 100 pounds there last month, and it's 50 now - well, someone stole the money :) (there was no 50% crash anywhere) Or maybe it's some weird fees / taxes from the 1115 pound investment?
