I think that the power and authority of the court is rooted in the fact that its rulings are enforced by a massive, well-armed law enforcement apparatus/organization. The authority of the state over its people resides in its war powers. The rulings of the Supreme Court become the law and are enforced by men (and women) with guns, not because the public has a good impression of the Supreme Court as an institution. :)
