So this is where a little bit of pharmacology knowledge comes into play. Melatonin is a hormone, not a drug. In general, you can't really overdose on a hormone. Like you can, but not really. It just up or down regulates things your body is going to do anyway. That being said, the real problem with hormones comes from long-term over supplementation or lack thereof. Things can develop incorrectly and that's not good.
A great example is testosterone. A lot of bodybuilders take testosterone to get bigger faster. They will often take 10 times what your body naturally produces with no ill effects. At least not right away. The problem is continued usage of it. They experience a lot of other side effects that come from the body down regulating hormones and over developing certain aspects.
I'm not endorsing what this lady did at all, I'm just saying that she wasn't putting the childs' lives in danger. Over supplementing a hormone is not a good thing and doing it without any medical supervision or consent is absolutely criminal.
