The funny thing about the SEC approval is that if you've been following that process for a while you'll know that it has nothing to do with Bitcoin itself. The SEC previously withheld approvals and were quite open about the amounts of fraud and lack of regulatory constraint on various exchanges. Exchanges today are still pretty bad but have come a decent way since those prior rejections.

One shouldn't think of the SEC as an entity that regulates what investments can and can't be bought. They're an entity that regulates legal and risk disclosure. The approvals finally got through because they finally felt like the legal risks of fraud and what not were adequately able to be disclosed to a normal person.
